ComEd customers in northern Illinois have an option most of the country doesn’t: hourly pricing, where the price you pay follows the wholesale market hour by hour. Overnight hours are usually the cheapest. It is a good match for an EV that sits in the garage all night, and a poor match if you need to charge at 6 pm on a hot July day.

How to pay less to charge in Illinois

Northern Illinois has an unusual option: ComEd’s hourly pricing program, where the price changes every hour with the wholesale market. Overnight hours are usually the cheapest, which suits EV charging. Illinois also lets many customers choose an alternative retail supplier.

ComEd explains its hourly program on its own site, and the Illinois Commerce Commission’s Plug In Illinois lists alternative suppliers. Plug any offer into the calculator to see it per month.
