How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Car? Tesla & Popular EVs (2026)

How Long Does It Take to Charge an Electric Car? Tesla & Popular EVs: 80% stop at a Tesla Supercharger

A Tesla Model Y takes about 11 h 41 min to charge from empty to full on a typical home Level 2 charger (7.7 kW), about 64 h 13 min on a regular 120-volt outlet, and roughly 15 to 30 minutes for a 10-80% stop at a Tesla Supercharger. Across popular EVs, a full charge takes 10 to 20 hours on a 7.7 kW Level 2 charger and 2.4 to 4.6 days on a regular outlet, depending mostly on battery size.

In practice almost nobody charges from zero. A 40-mile commute uses about 11 kWh, which a Level 2 charger puts back in well under two hours and a regular outlet replaces overnight. The table below shows full charges so you can compare cars.

Empty to full. Energy = EPA range × EPA kWh per 100 miles (wall-to-wheels, includes charging losses). Cost at the U.S. average of 18.16¢ per kWh (EIA, August 2026). Some cars accept less than 11.5 kW on AC; check your owner’s manual.

On a regular outlet a Tesla Model Y gains about 5 miles of range per hour, so 10 hours overnight adds roughly 51 miles. That covers a typical daily drive, which is why many owners never install a Level 2 charger. See Level 1 vs Level 2 charging and what a Level 2 charger costs to install.

How long does it take to charge a Tesla at a Supercharger?

Tesla says its V3 Superchargers add up to 200 miles in about 15 minutes, and most stops from 10% to 80% take 15 to 30 minutes. Charging slows down sharply after 80% to protect the battery, so the last 20% can take as long as the first 70%. Speed costs money: Superchargers average $0.62 per kWh for non-members, versus 18.16¢ at home. Compare every state in Tesla Supercharger cost by state.

What changes the charging time

  • Battery size: trucks and three-row SUVs carry two to three times the energy of a compact EV.
  • Charger power and your car’s onboard charger: a 48-amp wall unit only helps if the car accepts 11.5 kW.
  • Cold weather: a cold battery charges more slowly, especially at fast chargers. Preconditioning helps.
  • State of charge: charging is fastest between 10% and 80% and slows near full.
  • Shared circuits: some home and public chargers split power between two cars.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to charge a Tesla Model Y?

About 11 h 41 min from empty to full on a 7.7 kW Level 2 charger, 7 h 49 min on an 11.5 kW Wall Connector, and about 64 h 13 min on a 120V outlet. A 10-80% Supercharger stop usually takes 15 to 30 minutes.

How long does it take to charge a Tesla Model 3?

About 11 h 52 min on a 7.7 kW Level 2 charger and 65 h 18 min on a regular outlet, empty to full.

Can I charge an electric car overnight on a regular outlet?

Yes for most daily driving. Ten hours on a 120V outlet adds about 51 miles to a Model Y, enough for a typical commute, but not a full battery.

How much does a full charge cost?

At the U.S. average rate of 18.16¢ per kWh, a full charge costs about $16.33 for a Model Y and $27.84 for the largest truck in the table. See your state in the cost by state map.
